An exclusive interview with Stephan van Leeuwen about Magna Tyres in the Italian market

Magna Tyres Group has participated at the Italian Lifting Days (GIS), in Piacenza, showing three different product ranges: Crane, Construction and Port Handling tyres. We spoke with Stephan van Leeuwen, Sales Manager for Magna Tyres in Italy and the UK.

How did the exhibition go? What did Magna tyres present?

We are satisfied with the way the exhibition has developed and with our presence. During the GIS we always had interesting contacts. This year we have put two particular tyres in the spotlight: the first is the MA03, a crane tyre that recently is renewed. It has been on the market for the past 8 years and sells very well. It has been updated in terms of construction technology and compound. Cranes now move faster than they did a few years ago and the tyres have to meet new requirements.

The other tyre in the spotlight was the MB01+. This is a specific product for reachstackers, available in both the standard and Plus version. The Plus differs from the standard for 15 mm deepest tread: 70 mm versus 55 mm, which guarantees a longer tyre life and therefore a lower total cost per hour.

Finally, we also presented a new Construction range, launched at Bauma 2019. They are all products for small machines such as compact wheel loaders, telehandlers, backhoe loaders etc.

How is the Italian marketing going?

We have been active in Italy for just over 3 years and every year we grow more than 10%. This motivates us to participate at exhibitions and to invest. In general, Magna Tyres Group is growing: We have opened new offices in the USA, Canada, the new headquarters in South Africa and more recently in Germany. We are very satisfied, in addition we are also building the new Dutch headquarters of 58,000 square meters. One of the key aspects for growth in this business is, in fact, the availability of the product and we are acting accordingly. We also are working closely with the large manufacturers and here too we are growing: Liebherr, Volvo, Terex, are just some of the big names with whom we work.

The next step is to create Magna Tyres Italy?

It is one of the next steps. There are several options: create a company from scratch, acquire an existing one or work closely with a distributor. We are working on something, but noting is finalized yet. I am, therefore, open to all opportunities.
