A flat tyre on a skid steer cost more than just time
Every operator knows the scenario. The machine is mid-project in a demanding environment; waste processing, demolition, recycling and a pneumatic tyre gives out. A cut from sharp debris, a puncture nobody saw coming. The machine stops. The schedule slips. The costs mount. For skid steers operating daily in environments with sharp metal, concrete, glass or industrial waste, a pneumatic tyre is a structural risk. Solid skid steer tyres eliminate that risk entirely. No air pressure, no punctures, no unexpected standstill. What remains is a machine that keeps working, even when conditions make that a serious challenge.
Why choose solid tyres for a skid steer?
Solid skid steer tyres are specifically engineered for machines that operate under high load in environments with extreme cut and puncture risk. The operational advantages translate directly into continuity:
- No downtime from punctures. A solid tyre cannot go flat. In environments with sharp waste, recycling material or construction debris, this is the single most direct benefit to your operation.
- Superior cut and chunk resistance. The enhanced rubber compound of the Magna MA801 and Magna MA802 delivers greater resistance to cutting and chunking; the two most common causes of premature tyre failure in waste and recycling applications.
- Longer tyre life, lower cost-per-hour. A solid tyre significantly extends service life compared to pneumatic alternatives in demanding applications. That reduces your total cost-per-operating-hour directly.
- Higher load capacity in the same footprint. Solid tyres carry more weight without compromising machine dimensions, which matters when handling heavy loads in confined spaces.
Which skid steer tyre suits your machine?
Magna Tyres offers four models for skid steers, Bobcats and comparable compact equipment. The right choice depend on your machine, working environment and required load capacity.
Magna MA801: Solid, self-cleaning, widely applicable
The Magna MA801 is a fully solid tyre with a self-cleaning tread pattern and long service life. Available in 8 sizes, from 5.70-12 to 14.00-24, with load capacities from 1,300 to 8,000 kg at 25 km/h. The MA801 is the most versatile choice for skid steers in waste processing and recycling.
Suited to: waste processing, recycling, industrial site work with sharp debris
Magna MA802: Solid with an alternative tread design
The Magna MA802 delivers comparable solidity to the MA801, with a different tread design for specific traction requirements. Available in size 13.00-24 with a load capacity of 6,560 kg. A focused choice for operators who require an alternative tread profile on heavy compact equipment.
Suited to: heavy skid steers and compact equipment in waste and industrial applications.
Magna M-SKID4: Construction tyre with full-plat profile
The Magna M-SKID4 is a pneumatic construction tyre with a full-flat profile and self-cleaning stepped tread. All cross-ply construction delivers improved load performance and enhanced operator comfort. Available from 10-16.5 to 15-19.5, with load capacities up to 4,565 kg.
Suited to: skid steers on construction sites, ground work and compact excavation.
Magna M-SKID2: Construction tyre with deep tread
The Magna M-SKID2 combines deep tread with excellent self-cleaning properties and a specialised traction pattern. Available in 8 sizes, from 5.70-12 to 445/65-22.5, covering the widest range of applications. Load capacities up to 5,600 kg.
Reduced vibration, greater control: thanks to strategically positioned vent holes
A common concern with solid tyres is ride comfort: the assumption that solid rubber rides harder and transfers more vibration to the machine and operator. On the Magna MA801 and Magna MA802, Magna Tyres addresses this with strategically positioned vent holes in the sidewall. These openings absorb a portion of the shock load and reduce vibration transfer to the machine frame and cab. The result is a solid tyre with the load capacity and robustness of solid rubber, combined with ride characteristics that support operator productivity and wellbeing across long shifts.
The most common tyre sizes for skid steers and Bobcats
Skid steers, Bobcats and compact equipment for brand including Bobcat, Case, Caterpillar, JCB and Manitou are most commonly fitted with the following tyre sizes. We hold all of these sizes in stock:
| Size | Application |
|---|---|
| 10-16.5 | Most common size for mid-range skid steers |
| 12-16.5 | Standard for heavier Bobcats and compact loaders |
| 33×12-16 | Common size for compact machines in waste processing |
| 33×12-20 | Alternative for higher travel speed and medium load |
| 13.00-24 | Heavy solid tyre for industrial compact equipment |

What is the difference between a solid skid steer tyre and a pneumatic tyre?
A solid skid steer tyre is made entirely of rubber and contains no air. This means it cannot puncture or go flat, which eliminates a major cause of unplanned downtime in demanding environments such as waste processing, demolition and recycling. A pneumatic tyre offers a softer ride on lighter terrain but is vulnerable to cuts and punctures from sharp debris.
Are solid tyres suitable for all skid steer applications?
Solid tyres perform best in environments where puncture risk is high and downtime is costly; such as waste and recycling sites, scrap yards and heavy industrial terrain. For applications on soft, muddy or mixed ground where traction and ride comfort are the priority, a pneumatic construction tyre such as the Magna M-SKID2 or M-SKID4 may be the better fit.
Do solid skid steer tyres fit my Bobcat or compact loader?
Magna Tyres supplies solid and construction tyres in the most common sizes for Bobcat, Case, Caterpillar, JCB and Manitou machines, including 10-16.5, 12-16.5. If you are unsure which size fits your machine, our technical team can advise based on your machine model and working conditions.
Do solid tyres cause more vibration than pneumatic tyres?
This is a common concern. The Magna MA801 and MA802 feature strategically positioned vent holes in the sidewall that absorb shock and reduce vibration transfer to the cab and machine frame. While solid tyres are firmer by nature, these vent holes ensure ride characteristics that remain workable across full operating shifts.
